Every editor will tell you that an off-line editing suite can never have too much memory!
As directors shoot more and more raw material, often in multi-camera set-ups, there never seems to be enough storage space for the digitised footage.
Enter the Avid Unity shared storage system with a massive memory up to 16Tb.
Unity is a collection of hard disks supplying media storage space to a network of non-linear editing suites, both off-line and on. Editors working in any of the suites are allocated a volume of storage, and can simply request any extra storage space they need.
Workspace access and size are both carefully controlled and password protected to maintain security while maximising efficiency.
Editors are able to move their projects easily from one suite to another, making best use of time and facilities - and so keeping down costs.
A programme can be taken from Avid off-line to completion in Symphony on-line without having to move data or media.
Being central, Unity brings other advantages too. Digitised footage can be shared between editing suites working on the same project - particularly useful in sport for example, where one editor can be recording and digitising from satellite or an OB, another editing the programme and a third putting together edited highlights inserts.
The addition of Airspeed allows an editor to start editing before the ingest of the material is complete, and carries out the playout while the editor starts work on the next project.
