BBC Post Production delivers tailored workflow and dedicated facilities to revamp Ski Sunday

The 30th season of Ski Sunday came to an end on Sunday 9th March 2008, after an eight week run on BBC 2.

Ski Sunday has undergone a radical revamp, breaking from its traditional format.

Attempting such a departure was always going to be a challenge. However, BBC Post Production has vast experience working with productions to create bespoke, post production solutions.

We have found that working in collaboration with production teams, at a very early stage of development, ensures the best results.

This has been proven by our involvement with other high profile projects like Strictly Come Dancing, France on a Plate, EastEnders, Inside Sport and Match of Day.

Discussions started a year ago when Consultant Editor Charlie Cope was asked to help devise a workflow (view PDF here) that was able to adapt to Ski Sunday’s constantly changing demands.

Due to filming abroad, often at short notice, as well as editing many of the race packages on location we decided to build Ski Sunday a flexible online Avid editing village with connectivity to an Avid Air Speed, Off Tube Commentary Area and a dedicated Unity server.

Post Producer Logan Pillay, assembled a team of editors to work across the project. They include Charlie Cope and Lee Eynon, who have a strong documentary as well as Sport background, and newer talents like Hannah Barnes, David Horwell and Nathan Carpenter, who have recently cut features for Inside Sport, Match of the Day and worked across a variety of genres.

This year was the first year that Ski Sunday also provided comprehensive red button highlights coverage from the resorts of the Alpine World Cup series. By utilising the Avid Airspeed we are able to turnaround the highlights package and achieve tapeless delivery to Red Bee, for Broadcast, within hours of the live race.

Another innovation, motivated by controlling costs, was the installation of an ingest station situated in one of our edit suites. This enabled producers to log, digitise and assemble rough edits, saving valuable craft editing time.

We have been thrilled to work with Ski Sunday to deliver the highest levels of talent, technology and flexibility and look forward to the 31st Ski Sunday season.
