For offline and online editing. Capable of SD and HD formats.

What it does

When should I use it?

Scalable shared storage. When working on FCP projects. Where media needs to be shared between a wider network of cutting rooms to gain simultaneous access to material, i.e. useful for multiple cutting rooms working on the same programme.

When should I use it?

Two channel version of the Motif enabling more complex graphics, or combination of graphics with video clips.

For greater complexity than a single layer of text or a large amount of name captions.

What it does

When should I use it?

Caption generator, sometimes referred to as ‘cap gen’. To create a name strap or other text
on screen which sits over your pictures. Also for end rollers in a linear edit.

When should I use it?

Allows real time video to be recorded and replayed.

For greater animation and flexibility.

What it does

When should I use it?

A powerful editing application that offers most of the editing features of Avid Adrenaline or Media Composer. Xpress Pro can also be run on a desktop or (specified) laptop. Normally used at native DV or offline resolution but can be configured for SD or HD (using DNXHD).

For most offline projects that require later finishing in an Avid online suite. A cost-effective and compact editing workstation in work areas or on location, when offline or DV editing facilities are required in a limited space.
 

AVID MEDIA COMPOSERAVID MEDIA COMPOSER

What it does

When should I use it?

Classic family of non-linear editing tools. Offline/online capable, offering compression ratios from 1:1 (uncompressed) to 20:1 (heavily compressed) and native DV. Latest version is Adrenaline.

Except in Adrenaline, only runs a single resolution on the timeline at once. Don’t do native DV on a Meridian Media Composer if you can book Adrenaline.
 

AVID MEDIA COMPOSER (MC) SOFTAVID MEDIA COMPOSER (MC) SOFT

What it does

When should I use it?

Software version of Adrenaline. Has all the editing functionality of an Adrenaline but with no deck connectivity, therefore unable to digitise or playout locally.

For editing offline when no digitising or playout is required. Can be used to export files e.g. can be used to take projects off Unity and repackage for the web.

What it does

When should I use it?

Offline/online non-linear editor capable of offering a variety of SD compression ratios and native DV. In addition, it can offer HD using Avid's DNxHD compression codec. It also offers support for HDV and DVC Pro HD codecs.

Offline/online editing capable of HD. Permits any combination of resolutions on the timeline.
 

AVID NITRISAVID NITRIS

What it does

When should I use it?

A multi-stream, 10-bit uncompressed HD and SD finishing and mastering workstation. Capable of working with compressed (DNxHD) or uncompressed HD formats. Comes with two software options: DS Nitris and Symphony Nitris.

For complex programmes with lots of effects and graphics.

What it does

When should I use it?

Complex HD and SD effects tool for special effects heavy sequences. Similar abilities to Autodesk Smoke.

Special effects sequences.
 

AVID SYMPHONY NITRISAVID SYMPHONY NITRIS

What it does

When should I use it?

HD and SD online non-linear editing that allows more real time effects than Media Composer. Good colour correction and grading/styling ability. Lots of DVE functionality.

To finish and grade programmes.

When should I use it?

SD version of Symphony Nitris.

To finish and grade programmes.

When should I use it?

Dedicated video ingest, storage, and playout directly to and from Avid Unity shared storage.

For ‘as live’ productions and quick turnaround e.g. sport, ceremonial events.

When should I use it?

A high-definition video post-production codec engineered for multi-generation compositing with reduced storage and bandwidth requirements.

To deliver high quality HD without additional computing and storage costs to manipulate uncompressed HD.

Integrated asset management system.

To support collaborative ingest, desktop logging, graphics work and editing for both Avid and non Avid clients.

A Unity product that can be used by up to 20 workstations at a time with a maximum of 5 Tb (terabytes) of storage.

Ideal for smaller workgroups who need to share media during post production.

Family of scalable shared network storage systems, optimised for use with Avid editing products.

Where media needs to be shared between a wider network of cutting rooms to gain simultaneous access to material.

To find, sort and retrieve media quickly.

Where volume of rushes verses quick turn around or long production requiring pre edits to plan further shoots.

When should I use it?

Uncompressed, high-end, non-linear editing and finishing system.

For complex effects, powerful colour correction and motion tracking. Suitable for promos and pres graphics but also useful for documentaries and dramas. Use Fire for editing and Inferno for graphics.

For complex effects, powerful colour correction and motion tracking. Offers SD, HD and 2K resolutions. Full HD picture monitoring.

When should I use it?

Classic non-linear editing and effects
system.

For short form items like commercials where little or no sound editing is required. Offers lots of video effects and complex graphics.

 

QUANTEL eQQUANTEL eQ

What it does

When should I use it?

An uncompressed, non-linear editing and effects system. Allows you to work at SD and HD on the same timeline.

For uncompressed online finishing for programmes that need to be delivered in HD and SD. From the first conform to final mastering and versioning, the eQ combines powerful editing, effects and colour grading tools with ‘resolution co-existence’.

 

EVS LSM XTEVS LSM XT

What it does

When should I use it?

Hard disc recorder for live slow motion/playback, devised for use in quick turnaround operations, allows only very basic editing.

For sport or similar programmes where transmission is not necessarily live, but may be transmitted ‘as live’ only a few minutes later. Also useful for ‘instant replay’ applications and frequently used in a multi-camera environment such as sport.

 

PHOTOSHOPPHOTOSHOP

What it does

When should I use it?

Graphics editor.

To produce special effects such as backgrounds, textures, key mattes within a non-linear edit.

 

PIEROPIERO

What it does

When should I use it?

A system for generating virtual views of sporting events and adding 'tied-to-pitch' graphics.

To create a virtual stadium, which is synchronised to the 'real' pictures coming from the TV cameras. Ideal for sport analysis.

 

SHAKESHAKE

What it does

When should I use it?

Compositing and effects software package for Mac OSX. Layering, tracking, rotoscoping, painting and colour correction are all standard effects tools available in SHAKE.

For flexible decision making in a non-linear environment. Technical and creative decisions can be changed or edited at any point in the compositing process.

What it does

When should I use it?

Digital video effects tool.

When editing in a linear suite. It allows complex video manipulation and effects.
