ARCARC

What it does

When should I use it?

Aspect Ration Conversion/Converter.

To select which part of a 4:3 picture will be used on a 16:9 display, or select which part of a 16:9 picture will be used on 14:9 display.

 

CHUNKINGCHUNKING

What it does

When should I use it?

Allows access to media files before they have finished ingesting.

For quick turn around edits or as LIVE e.g. Sport, reality shows.
 

D&ED&E

What it does

When should I use it?

Dialogue and Effects.

A version of the dubbed sound which is clean of music and commentary.

 

EDLEDL

What it does

When should I use it?

Edit Decision List.

The computer record of the edit decisions made in the offline or online edit.

 

INGESTINGEST

What it does

When should I use it?

To transfer media onto a network storage area or onto local media storage. Similar to digitising.

To convert your rushes to digital media which can be permanently stored or only stored for a designated period of time. Designed to avoid repeated tape playout and digitising and to provide a single research database linked to the server.

 

ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)

What it does

When should I use it?

Digital telephone network, designed to allow transmission of voice and data over ordinary telephone copper wires, resulting in better quality than available with the PSTN system.

To send material between two studios, as long as each studio has a ISDN box to transmit or receive.
 

KEYINGKEYING

What it does

When should I use it?

To replace part of one picture with another.

To superimpose actors over a remote location, or captions over a background.

 

LANLAN

What it does

When should I use it?

Local Area Network.

To network computers covering a small geographic area, an office or a group of buildings.

 

METADATAMETADATA

What it does

When should I use it?

Data about data.

To keep track of files or assets, logging data can be added and numbering as in library system. The metadata allows you to quickly search and keep track of media.

 

M&EM&E

What it does

When should I use it?

Music, Effects and Dialogue mix, minus the narration.

For international versions where local language may be added, or items which will have a live voiceover during transmission.

 

FULLY FILLED M&EFULLY FILLED M&E

What it does

When should I use it?

Music and Effects mix, dialogue free.

For international reversioning (e.g to remix the mix and effects with a new foreign language).

 

MIRROR STORAGEMIRROR STORAGE

What it does

When should I use it?

Configuration of a storage system to provide two copies of data to protect against disc failure.

To protect non-linear project data.
 

QUADSPLITQUADSPLIT

What it does

When should I use it?

Four images displayed on one screen, usually showing different camera angles recorded simultaneously. Allows pseudo ‘vision mixing’ in an edit.

For post producing a programme recorded in a multicamera format i.e. master record plus three other ISOs. These four sources can be displayed on one screen together.
 

RAID STORAGERAID STORAGE

What it does

When should I use it?

The use of multiple storage devices multiplexed together to provide a single store. A bit like Unity.

To allow a storage system to provide faster data transfer rates (ie higher quality video) than possible on one of the drives.

 

PLAYOUTPLAYOUT

What it does

When should I use it?

Transfer of media from a non-linear system to a tape, server or live to air.

To deliver your programme to tape, server or live to air.
 

SAMPLE RATESAMPLE RATE

What it does

When should I use it?

A constant reference speed at which audio is captured within a digital system.

There are a number of standards, the higher the better (in theory), but we typically work at 48KHz.
 

SOUND DESIGNSOUND DESIGN

What it does

When should I use it?

A process of tracklaying where new effects are artificially created using digital synthesis.

To create new sounds for animation, CGI’s or to enhance a particular scene.
 

SPLIT MIXESSPLIT MIXES

What it does

When should I use it?

Or ‘stems’. Variant mixes derived from a final mix but clean of certain components. The split mixes generated might be an M&E and/or a D&E, a clean music split and a clean commentary split. See M&E and D&E above.
