BBC POST EXTENDS
HD OFFERING
BBC Post Production can now provide a complete offering of HD facilities
for programme makers, across its sites in London, Bristol and Birmingham.
Its latest investment in new HD grading equipment – an HD
Pogle, a “Scream” grain reducer for Super 16mm film
and a Digital Vision DVNR ASC3 (Advanced Scratch and Dirt Concealment)
with Motion Estimation – enables craft staff to correct colour,
refine and re-master in HD. This compliments its existing HD grading
equipment, which includes Spirit Telecine and Shadow.
The new grading offering sits alongside BBC Post Production’s
HD Editing, Graphics and Up-Conversion equipment. Its HD Editing
system includes Discreet Fire and Quantel eQ. HD Graphics are provided
for through Discreet Flame and Shake, whilst an Alchemist Platinum
enables HD up-conversion. A direct digital pathway between the Spirit
Telecine, HD Pogle and the Quantel eQ, provides potential for future
tape-less HD production.
BBC Post Production in London has just completed work in HD on
two BBC short films, “Undone” written and directed by
Lucy Moore and “The Accidental Perfectionist” written
and directed by Corin Long. The HDCam rushes were transferred to
digibeta for the AVID offline edit, then conformed, graded and on-line
edited on HD using the eQ suite.
BBC Resources can now support HD programmes every step of the way
– from acquisition through to finishing. BBC Outside Broadcasts
new multi-format truck – Unit 2 will film The Last Night of
The Proms 2004 in HD. This is the first major music and arts event
to be captured in the 1080-line format by the new multi-format truck.
BBC Resources’ HD investment is in response to the worldwide
sales potential for HD output and follows on from recent successes
such as BBC Post Production’s first HD drama ‘Every
Time You Look at Me’, which aired in the UK in April 2004.
The organisation has also been behind the upconversion of material
for US Company Cinemuse ranging from the award-winning natural history
documentary series’ Blue Planet and Walking with Dinosaurs
to The Inspector Lindley Mysteries and Judge John Deed.
Andy King, Head of Capital Development, BBC Resources comments:
“We have extensive experience of working in HD and have managed
a large volume of HD output to date. The potential HD market in
Europe and worldwide has been the major driver behind our HD equipment
investment. International broadcasters and programme makers are
increasingly looking for finished programmes and they expect us
to deliver to high standards.”
