BBC Outside Broadcasts’ Special Cameras Team Pioneers HD Onboard Cameras
6 September 2006: BBC Outside Broadcasts Special Cameras team pioneered HD onboard camera systems for the first time at Goodwood Revival Meeting at Goodwood House near Chichester, the world’s largest historical motor racing event, which sees classic racing cars from the 1950s and 1960s compete.
BBC Outside Broadcasts Special Cameras team fitted 13 classic cars with HDV cameras. In spite of poor weather conditions, stunning HD pictures from inside the cars were achieved, to enhance the viewers’ experience of the motor sport.
BBC Outside Broadcasts, part of BBC Resources Ltd, was contracted by production partners Gemini Pictures and BHP Sport Ltd who are delivering programmes for a number of broadcasters including ITV1 and Discovery.
In addition BBC Outside Broadcasts Special Cameras team has also recently developed and built the world’s first HD Plunge Cam, which will be used at the Doha Asian Games in December 2006. The HD camera, mounted on a 16m vertical track, will capture divers in real time as they free fall into the pool. It will cover all three dive platforms, from 10m to 3m, travelling to 4m below the water.
BBC Outside Broadcasts’ Special Cameras team continually strive to technological ‘firsts’, from ground breaking cricket stump cameras to the innovative new Post Cam, a remotely-operated 360 degree panning camera which can provide enhanced coverage of rugby.
