BBC Outside Broadcasts shares skills with young programme makers
27 April 2006: BBC Outside Broadcasts is helping students from Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication in South London on Friday 28 April in the production of a programme for their annual Rave on Air event in June.
Students will work with BBC Outside Broadcasts' expert crew and equipment, led by Engineering Manager Alan Jessop, whose credits range from the Winter Olympics 2006, Wimbledon, The Six Nations and Football Focus, to The Proms, Chelsea Flower Show, Golden Jubilee and Watchdog. The BBC Outside Broadcast team of six, comprising Vision, Sound, Cameras and Riggers, will be available to help and guide the students through their programme. BBC Outside Broadcasts is providing a production vehicle - Unit 25 - as well as vision, sound, cameras and video tape equipment, giving students hands-on experience of what it is like to work on an outside broadcast.
Alan Jessop, BBC Outside Broadcasts’ Engineering Manager says: “This is the third year we’ve supported Rave on Air. It’s great to be able to share our skills with the next generation of programme makers and hopefully help bridge the gap between education and employment in the broadcast industry.”
The Rave on Air event takes place on the 1 June at Ravensbourne in South London. The MDs of the event, Ryan Daly and David Arshadi are bringing together all the broadcast courses at Ravensbourne to put on a professional show for the broadcast industry.
BBC Outside Broadcasts will work with students to capture an hour-long light entertainment show called TBA, which is being filmed in a Barn at Hilliers Tree Nursery, Liss in Hampshire. The programme is produced by final year degree students Ben Ransom, Chris Hale and Ben Schmidt. Ravensbourne is one of the top broadcasting colleges in the UK.
TBA involves cars and boats which need to be easily manoeuvred, which is not possible in their existing facilities, so the college approached BBC Outside Broadcasts for help.
Ben Ransom, Student Producer, says : “We’re really excited about working with BBC Outside Broadcasts for the Rave on Air event. We’re passionate about television and it is fantastic to see our idea make it from paper to screen.”
