BBC POST PRODUCTION EXPANDS ITS HD OFFERING
AND SEALS UP-CONVERSION OF BLUE PLANET FOR DISCOVERY
10 March 2003: BBC Post Production has expanded its High Definition
(HD) post production offering with the acquisition of a Quantel
eQ finishing system. The move follows the recent acquisition of
a Shadow Telecine in Bristol and the up-grade of its Spirit Telecine
in London. The new equipment deals have been closely followed by
an agreement with Discovery to provide up-converted HD footage of
The Blue Planet series.
The new eQ will allow the conform, grading and online process to
be used by the craft staff to create finished HD programmes for
the international market. The Shadow in Bristol will be used to
handle predominately natural history and factual and learning programming,
while the London-based Telecine will be used mostly for music and
arts programming.
The addition of the latest equipment, with the inclusion of the
existing HD Fire and Alchemist Platinum HD upconverter, will allow
BBC Post Production to offer a complete HD package for its customers.
In addition to high end broadcast, the equipment will also handle
Standard Definition (SD) resolution output.
The new equipment acquisition has coincided with Discovery's decision
to accept the back catalogue of critically-acclaimed natural history
series, Blue Planet. BBC Post Production worked with BBC Specialist
Factual and BBC Worldwide on developing up-converted HD material
that would comply with broadcasting and quality standards.
