BBC POST PRODUCTION CREATES NEW WAY OF WORKING
FOR THE WEAKEST LINK
04 March 2003: BBC Post Production has won a contract for the fifth
series of The Weakest Link based on the creation of new working
methods and a dedicated work area for the landmark series, which
is due to air on 13 May 2003.
For the first time, the series will be edited entirely online and
will dispense with the traditional method of editing offline, conforming
and editing online. Despite the graphics-heavy element of the show,
BBC Post Production proved that it could maintain consistent quality
during an innovative pilot conducted in January this year. This
non-linear approach will allow for greater efficiencies including
time and cost savings for the production team.
As part of the deal, BBC Post Production has also created a dedicated
work environment for The Weakest Link a self-contained mini
facilities house containing three Avid suites, linked on a Unity
shared media storage system, as well as a new post production office.
A team of highly experienced Avid Editors have been brought on board
to post produce the entertainment show. With experience across other
genres they are expected to bring a fresh perspective and new approach.
The production team will also have a single point of contact with
an Avid assistant that will run the facility full-time.
Jo Street, Series Producer, The Weakest Link comments on the move:
"For the fifth series we were looking to refresh every area
of production and find new ways of producing the programme but keep
it looking glossy, beautiful and maintain the high quality that
viewers expect. We were delighted when BBC Post Production approached
us with ideas about new ways of working that would help us save
time and money, turn shows around more efficiently and welcome new
talent onto the team."
Sonia Rajani, Post Producer, BBC Post Production adds: "We
are pleased to have won work on the series for the first time. We
wanted to take it to a different level and prove that it was possible
to edit a multi-camera, graphics-heavy series online and not lose
any of the quality. Our biggest challenge was to gut the existing
offices that we had and turn around the work space in just four
weeks."
