BBC POST PRODUCTION WINS NEW YORK FESTIVAL BRONZE FOR BEST SPECIAL EFFFECTS IN A DOCUMENTARY/INFORMATION PROGRAMME

BBC Post Production scooped a Bronze at the New York Festival for 'Best Special Effects in a Documentary/Information Programme' for 'Bismarck', a prime-time two-part documentary commissioned by ITN, Specialist Factual. The programmes originally aired on Channel 4 in December 2001 and are due to be transmitted again in December 2003.

'Bismarck' illustrates the fortunes of two of the most powerful battleships - the British ship HMS Hood and the German battleship Bismarck - and their subsequent duel in the North Atlantic, which proved to be one of the turning points of the Second World War.

Using drama-reconstructions, stylised computer graphics (CG) sequences, 'angels eye' and schematic views of the battle - the story is told from the points of view of survivors and eye-witness accounts as the events unfold - illustrating the final devastating moments of both ships and the huge loss of life on both sides.

The effects shots included the recreation of the Bismarck battleship. Utilising state-of-the-art CG and compositing techniques, many of the sequences use specially shot 'practical' effects elements such as real pyrotechnics, smoke and 'cloud tank' techniques to add a degree of gritty realism to the illustrative 'look and feel' of the documentary.

Andy McNamara, Senior Animator at BBC Post Production comments: "We aimed to make the graphical style of the CG sequences illustrative in nature and give a dramatic feel that is sympathetic to the subject matter. We are pleased to have won this award and it is testament to the success of the documentaries that Channel 4 are planning to show them again this year."
