BBC Resources win Royal Television Society Craft
& Design Awards
The Royal Television Society Craft & Design Awards,
held on November 18 in London, turned out to be an exceptionally successful
evening for the BBC overall and an excellent evening for Resources in
particular. By the end of the evening, staff in Outside Broadcasts and
Post Production had collected six awards, including the prestigious Judges
Award.
Outside Broadcasts' camera and sound teams both won
awards for their coverage of the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The jury described the multicamera work on the Jubilee
as "..a visual tour de force with wonderfully executed crane shots
and live coverage of the highest quality".
They were equally enthusiastic about the work of the
sound team on the same programme. Their summing up described the work
as " A great technical achievement all round, considering such diverse
content from so many different locations and venues, and all live".
Jo Payne, Tim Coope and Alan Hoida, from Post Production
in Bristol, celebrated winning the Tape and Film Editing category for
their work on the hugely successful Blue Planet. The jury praised the
team's expertise saying that "... the remarkable eye and technical
skill of the editors achieved the overall vision of the director".
Also from Bristol, Howard Jones was the key digital
effects designer on Weird Nature, which won in both the Design and Craft
Innovation and Picture Enhancement categories.
Recognition in these categories was cause for celebration
enough, but there was more to come. The evening culminated in the announcement
of the Judges Award and this year it went to BBC Outside Broadcasts for
" an outstanding year of event coverage". The jury particularly
highlighted OBs' work on The Queen Mother's Funeral, The Golden Jubilee
and The Proms, acknowledging that "..coverage of these massive events
looks effortless and flawless, but all of us know that it is probably
the most challenging and riskiest form of television possible".
Two days before the RTS Awards ceremony in London, the
society's North West Awards had been held in Manchester, where OBs were
part of the BBC team that won two major awards for their coverage of the
XV11 Commonwealth Games.
